17th Century Domestic Goddesses in action!
The Stuart Age is a period in history often overshadowed by the English Civil War. But it was also a century of change, the dawn of modern England, and offers a wealth of social and cultural history to be explored.
Stuart Regalia is a small group re-creating the fashions of the Stuart era and providing an insight into the social and cultural history of the Stuart Age through dining, dress, changes in fashion, accessories and cosmetics.
Various aspects of life portrayed, from the working classes to the royal courts
Cosmetics in all their glorious detail, including perfumes
The mid-day meal, showing some of the etiquette of Stuart dining
Reproduction furniture and tableware
Skilled needlewomen and clothing on show
Lace for collars and edgings, embroidery decoration on linens, even garter knitting!

Cowdray is a Historic Tudor House set in Midhurst, West Sussex. Cowdray is one of England's most important early Tudor houses. This visitor attraction, visited by Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII, was partially destroyed by fire in 1793. Its magnificent ruins are set in the stunning landscape of Cowdray Park, in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Cowdray plays host to special events throughout the season, including outdoor theatre and period re-enactments. The Cowdray audio tour is recommended for visitors and we also have a popular special children's version of the audio tour. |
